QUESTIONS & ANSWERS ON UV DISINFECTION
HEALTH
Is UV radiation harmful to health?
UV radiation is a component of sunlight. If the safety instructions for operating the systems are observed, there is no health risk for the user.
Is UV radiation toxic?
No!
Is the water radioactive or contaminated by UV?
No!
Does UV radiation cause pollutants?
When using high-quality PURION systems and spare parts, e.g. lamps and quartz materials, UV radiation does not cause any harmful substances.
UV RADIATION
How does UV radiation affect germs?
Harmful germs are inactivated by the UV radiation inside the systems and thus rendered harmless.
Does UV radiation change the taste of the water?
There is no change in odor or taste due to the disinfection of water in UV systems.
What is the service life of a UV lamp?
PURION GmbH recommends replacing the UV lamp after approx. 1.5 years of continuous operation. Frequent switching on and off reduces the service life.
What influences the effectiveness of the UV system?
Turbidity of the water and a high iron content can reduce the effectiveness of UV radiation. An adequate pre-filter should therefore also be used in these cases.
Can UV radiation replace boiling water?
If high-quality UV systems are used properly, there is no need to boil water. However, official orders should still be complied with, as the reason for the order is often unknown.
OPPORTUNITIES AND LIMITS
Is UV a filter?
Filters are retention systems. UV systems are used to inactivate bioorganisms and are therefore not filters when used exclusively.
Does UV radiation make cloudy water clear again?
Turbidity is caused by suspended matter and solid particles in the water. These cannot be retained by UV systems.
Does UV radiation remove arsenic?
As UV radiation only has a microbiological effect, arsenic cannot be removed.
Can a UV system contribute to water softening?
Hardness images are exclusively chemical components of water. These remain unaffected by UV radiation. Therefore, a UV system does not contribute to water softening.
APPLICATIONS
Why don't I just use chlorine for water treatment?
Water treatment with chlorine can produce disinfection by-products, the carcinogenic effects of which have been proven. Allergies, inflammation and irritation are another unpleasant consequence of using chlorine. The use of chlorine also changes the taste and smell of the water.
Is UV treatment enough to guarantee drinking water?
UV treatment ensures that the water is biologically safe. In addition, however, it must be ensured that the water is also safe in terms of possible chemical impurities.
Can I supplement my domestic water supply with a UV system?
The PURION UV systems are dimensioned in such a way that disinfection or sterilization of the water at all tapping points in the house, e.g. taps, showers, can be easily ensured directly at the domestic water inlet.
Can the UV system be used in fish ponds?
The UV system can be operated in fish ponds without any problems. However, the correct dimensioning must be ensured. Unlike drinking water, the water in fish ponds is only partially sterilized in the bypass flow.
Can the UV system be operated without a central power supply?
Our systems can be operated with 12 V or 24 V direct current. Therefore, operation without a central power supply, e.g. for caravans, is also possible without any problems.
What are the options in the event of a power failure?
A power supply is required to operate the PURION UV systems. As a supplement, we offer a decentralized power supply that ensures the necessary power supply in the event of temporary outages.
Can UV systems be used with well water?
The UV systems can be used with well water without hesitation.
CONSTRUCTION DESIGN
Why do we use stainless steel and not plastic for the UV system?
Plastic becomes brittle when exposed to UV radiation. This jeopardizes operational safety during long-term operation. Stainless steel, on the other hand, enables many years of operation without any loss of quality. This saves you costs.
Is it complicated to change the lamp?
The lamp can be changed in just a few simple steps, even by non-professionals. Thanks to our innovative design, not even tools are required.
Do I need my own pump for a UV system?
The UV system is integrated into existing water circuits or flow systems. Therefore, no additional pump is required to operate the UV system.
Is the flow rate of the water limited by PURION UV systems?
The flow rate remains unchanged. However, to ensure reliable disinfection, the system-specific flow rate must not be exceeded. PURION UV systems have a throughput of 1000 liters per hour to 7000 liters per hour.
What is the service life of the systems?
With proper operation and maintenance as well as regular replacement of the UV lamp, PURION UV systems can be used for an unlimited period of time.
Who can install and replace UV lamps?
Installation and replacement can easily be carried out by non-professionals. Please study our operating and maintenance instructions.
COSTS
How high is the energy requirement?
The energy requirement depends on the output of the UV lamp. This is comparable to the energy requirement of average light bulbs for lighting.
Is the use of UV radiation more expensive than chlorine?
The purchase costs for the UV systems pay for themselves after just 1.5 years due to the savings in chlorine requirements.
